Welcome to Grapeland and Houston County.
Grapeland is a sturdy community nestled in northern Houston county on US 287 between Crockett and Palestine.
The area was settled by early Texas pioneers and the town, named for the wild grapes in the area, came to focus
under the influence of the railroad.
Grapeland is driven by a solid sense of history, pride and self-preservation.
Over the years it has slowly adapted its character to meet the challenge of the times and yet maintain its
staunch connection to legacy and the pioneer spirit.
It respects the individuality kindled by its ancestors yet readily stands together as a community for fellowship,
revelry, and necessity.
Grapeland today is highlighted by history, churches, music, watermelons, cattle and steel.
Add the spice of media, antiques, finance, construction, recreation and transportation together with the
on-set of gas production in the area Grapeland stands as an icon of the Texas mystic. Land is plentiful,
rolling and suited to recreation, agriculture, living, and enjoying its rustic beauty. I can’t think of a
place better suited for capturing a simpler lifestyle, kicking back from the hectic pace of city and job,
or settling to raise a family in the traditional manner.
Our year is highlighted by a number of festive community events.
These include occurrences of the Texas Opry on the first Saturday of the month, the Gospel Music Festival
on Memorial Day weekend, the Bluegrass Music Festival on Labor Day weekend and the Peanut Festival on the
second weekend in October.
I invite you to find out more about Grapeland, to visit and spend some time with us,
and to consider how you can be enriched in spirit by our unique combination of past and present.
Whether you come for a visit or for a lifetime I am sure you will be better for the experience.
Sincerely,
John A. Schell
